FGC also contributes to the celebration of the anniversary with the provision of special spaces and services on the Rack Railway
Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) is joining the celebration of the Millenary of the founding of the Montserrat monastery with a unique initiative: vinyling the Rack Railway with commemorative motifs of this important anniversary. The vinyl, which will be visible on the rack trains until the end of this year, incorporates the Millenary motto, which is based on the well-known “Ora et labora” attributed to the Benedictine communities for some time and, at the same time, complements it with a reflection on the ten centuries of monastic life.
In addition to vinyling the Rack, FGC is contributing to the celebration of the ten centuries of the monastery by providing spaces, such as the terrace of the Santa Cova station, to host events and by launching special services on the Rack to improve accessibility for people participating in the commemorative events.
With all these actions, FGC Turisme joins the celebration of the Millenary of Montserrat, giving visibility to the importance of this event and the role of the Abbey in Catalan society.
Record figures
The Montserrat Rack Railway, a reference means of transport that ensures sustainable access to the Monastery and the Montserrat Mountain Natural Park, has reached a record number of passengers this 2024, with a total of 721,713 people, the highest figure in its 21-year history. This increase represents an increase of 22.05% compared to 2023 and 2.79% in relation to its previous best year, 2019. The funiculars have also experienced significant growth, with a total of 447,627 users.
The Montserrat Rack Railway offers a panoramic, fast and comfortable journey, with free parking at the Monistrol Vila station. Both the Rack Railway and the funiculars are key elements of the sustainable mobility service that FGC offers in Montserrat, facilitating visitors’ access to the many activities in the area. In 2025, the Rack Railway will continue to serve Montserrat, a year in which the activities celebrating the Abbey’s millennium will continue, with events such as the arrival of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, scheduled for March 27.
The Montserrat Rack Railway and the Montserrat funiculars join the offer of tourist trains from FGC Turisme, which promotes the use of public transport, the fight against climate change, respect for the environment and the development of mountain areas.
