The end of the stage is supported by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, which manages the Cremallera and the Montserrat Funicular.
Montserrat will host a stage finish of the Volta a Catalunya 2025, for the third time in its history, after the editions of 1995 and 1960. Coinciding with the celebration of the millennium of the foundation of the Monastery of Montserrat, the Volta will experience one of the most spectacular and emblematic stage finals of the test. The agreement was made possible, among others, thanks to the support of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) and the Abbey of Montserrat.
The mountain of Montserrat, one of the most representative landscapes of our territory, will be one of the highlights of the next edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. The emblematic mountain will become the end of a stage that promises to leave us with impressive impressions and that, thanks to the arrival of the cogwheel train, will make it easier for fans to enjoy first-hand, a first-class cycling day.
When we talk about Montserrat we are talking about much more than a mountain, because we must add its spiritual dimension, its significance in popular religiosity, its cultural dynamism and the symbolism it exercises towards a country. The mountain, the sanctuary, the monastery, the school, … make Montserrat one of the most beloved collective references in Catalonia and the most recognized internationally.
Precisely in 2025, the thousand years since the founding of the Monastery will be celebrated, ten centuries of history during which they have experienced moments of war and peace, of darkness and splendor, ten centuries that are now celebrated with various religious, cultural, sports and popular events that will conclude on December 8, 2025. Fifteen months of activities open to everyone who wants to participate, in which we will be able to experience a top-level cycling stage as a sporting highlight.
It will be the third time that a stage of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya ends in this unique environment. The last of them, in 1995, was contested with a stage starting from Manlleu and arriving at the Monastery of Montserrat. The winner was the French cyclist Laurent Jalabert, one of the most charismatic runners of the 90s. The first of them dates back to 1960, in a time trial that joined Monistrol de Montserrat with the Monastery and was won by Majorcan Antonio Karmany, one of the best climbers of the time.
Carles Ruiz, president of FGC, highlights the uninterrupted participation of Ferrocarrils with La Volta since 2013, a fact that reaffirms the company’s commitment to the promotion of competitive sport in any of its modalities and disciplines as well such as the commitment to the territory and to all those important events that promote and boost the country, such as the Volta. “The race is a privileged showcase to show our environment and we are particularly proud to collaborate precisely in a year in which the Millennium of the foundation of the monastery of Montserrat is celebrated”, explains Ruiz.
Bernat Juliol, Commissioner of the Millennium, highlights the link between competitive sport and the motto of the Millennium, which represent the Benedictine virtues of Christianity; ora, lege, labora, rege te ipsum in communitate. Cyclists, like elite athletes, experience firsthand the need to self-govern, to work hard, to be consistent, to get back up every time they have a fall for the benefit of a milestone, a goal, which is unattainable without a good team behind it. This is the Montserrat recipe for facing a full life and this recipe is practiced by a competitive cyclist every day of his life.
Rubèn Peris, General Director of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, celebrated with enthusiasm the return of the Volta to a place as emblematic as Montserrat; “For the organization of the Volta, beyond the symbolism that the mountain represents, it is an important logistical challenge, since we are talking about a UCI World Tour event that moves a human fabric of 800 people and numerous vehicles ‘organization, team buses, etc… What we are clear about is that the images that will leave us will go around the world and will be remembered for their beauty and spectacularity.”
Thanks to the arrival by public transport of the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Railway Rack, it is expected to be a stage with a lot of followers on the part of the fans, as they will be able to access it easily. A journey of less than 15 minutes to the foot of the Sanctuary, which will surely offer us a memorable arrival where we can see the best cyclists in the world.
With six months until the celebration of the test that will take place between 24 and 30 March 2025, the Volta reveals one of the finish locations. A high-voltage arrival of which we will soon reveal more details, as well as other cities and towns that will end up making up the final route of the 104th edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.
