Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) presented this afternoon, as part of the B-Travel sustainable tourism fair, which is being held until Sunday at the Montjuïc fair, its offer of tourist transport, which offers a comfortable and sustainable way to discover some of the most emblematic places in Catalonia: The Montserrat Rack Railway and Funiculars, which provide direct access to the most important tourist and pilgrimage destination in Catalonia; the Núria Rack Railway, a tourist transport with more than 90 years of history and the only access to the mountain station; the Tren del Ciment, in Berguedà, a tourist train with more than a century of history that crosses forests and privileged natural environments at the gates of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park; the Tren dels Llacs, which goes from the Plana de Lleida to the Pre-Pyrenees and crosses some of the most impressive and unique landscapes in Catalonia, and the Tren Granota del Vallès, built in the post-war period in the historic Sarrià workshop.
During the presentation, the president of FGC, Carles Ruiz Novella, highlighted: “The train has historically meant the development of territories. Today, with these tourist transports, we continue to work for territorial cohesion while contributing to making the environment, natural spaces and gastronomy known”.
FGC tourist transports are a comfortable and different way to discover Catalonia. On board the different trains, rack railways and funiculars, FGC offers a complete experience that combines the journey with the discovery of the natural and cultural environments close to its lines, with the main objective of rediscovering places in inland Catalonia. Last year, more than 1.4 million people enjoyed the experience of traveling on FGC tourist trains.
Tren del Ciment
With over 100 years of history, the Tren del Ciment, known as the “Carrilet”, offers a 20-minute journey through 3.5 kilometers of forests and spectacular landscapes. This railway gem, which once connected the Asland cement factory in Castellar de n’Hug with Guardiola de Berguedà, allows visitors to discover the natural beauty of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, one of the largest parks in Catalonia.
It will start the season on April 5 and will be in service until November 2. This year, access to the La Pobla de Lillet station has been improved and new experiences are offered at the Cement Museum: the immersive experience “Factory Inside” on Saturdays from May 17, and the theatrical visits “Asland a century ago”, every Saturday of the season.
Tren dels Llacs
It offers two ways to travel from the plain of Lleida to the Pre-Pyrenees. On the one hand, the Historical Train allows you to relive the past with a design from the 1960s, with capacity for 280 passengers, while it travels through the landscapes of Lleida to the Pyrenean lakes and Pobla de Segur. And, on the other hand, the Panoramic Train offers spectacular views thanks to its large windows. This train, with 90 seats in two cars, is adapted for people with reduced mobility.
It will be in service from April 26 to October 25. During these months, it will make a total of 27 trips, 23 with the Historical Train and 4 with the Panoramic Train.
Montserrat Rack Railway and Funiculars
The Rack Railway is one of the main means of accessing the Montserrat Sanctuary and, at the same time, brings you closer to one of the most emblematic places in Catalonia: the Montserrat Mountain Natural Park, in Bages. This iconic place is just over an hour and a half away by public transport from the city of Barcelona. The Sant Joan and Santa Cova funiculars, for their part, make the Montserrat mountain and Santa Cova more accessible.
This year, the Rack Railway trains are wearing special vinyl to commemorate the Millennium of the Monastery, with the motto “Ora et labora”. Spaces, such as the terrace of the Santa Cova station, have also been set up to host events. In addition, the launch of special Rack Railway services to improve accessibility for people participating in the Millennium commemorative events is noteworthy.
Núria Rack Railway
It is the only means of transport to reach the mountain station of Vall de Núria, in Ripollès, surrounded by mountains almost 3,000 meters high. This tourist train, with more than 90 years of history, travels 12.5 kilometers and overcomes a difference in altitude of 1,000 meters, offering impressive views of the landscape. It is recommended to book your ticket in advance, thus guaranteeing availability.
In Vall de Núria, a viewpoint with panoramic views is being opened this year, the Telecadira de la Pala is being put into operation to enjoy panoramic views of the valley and new recreational proposals are being added, such as a star observatory and a relaxation area. In addition, within the framework of the Ecovall project, sustainability projects such as the expansion of geothermal energy and the use of electric vehicles are being promoted.
Tren Granota
It is a train built in the post-war period in the historic Sarrià workshop that was in circulation for more than 50 years. Today, it is back in operation, representing a historical railway jewel in Catalonia. The Granota runs between Les Planes and the stations of Sabadell and Terrassa, in the Vallès Occidental.
It will be put into service on the first Sunday of each month, from May to December (with the exception of the months of July and August), specifically on the following days: May 4, June 1, September 7, October 5, November 2 and December 7. On each trip, the train, declared a Cultural Asset of General Interest in 2023 by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia, stops at all intermediate stations, where you can get on and off the vehicle.
