SUSTAINABILITY
The tourism services offered by FGC’s Turistren brand are deeply committed to the company’s overall strategy, which prioritizes environmental protection, the fight against climate change, and sustainability in the communities where it operates. In addition, efforts are being made to strike a balance between economic viability, social inclusion, and environmental conservation. As part of its commitment to sustainability, FGC TURISME has implemented a 2030 Climate Action Plan. This document, resulting from the company’s endorsement of the Glasgow Declaration at the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP26, outlines five main pillars for effectively addressing the challenge of climate change: measuring environmental impact, reducing carbon emissions, regenerating ecosystems, establishing partnerships, and securing funding for sustainable projects.
MAIN projects
At Turistren, we strive to make the journey as spectacular as the destination, but with the least possible environmental impact. Our rack-and-pinion trains are prime examples of how heritage and technology can coexist to protect the local environment.
Montserrat Rack Railway
The Montserrat Rack Railway is the best alternative to private transportation for reaching the Sanctuary and the Natural Park. Since its inauguration in 2003, it has established itself as a model of sustainability thanks to these key factors:
- 100% clean energy: Both the rack railway and the funiculars run entirely on solar-powered electricity, eliminating direct CO₂ emissions.
- Record-breaking results: In 2024, thanks to the more than 661,000 passengers who chose the train, 454.84 metric tons of CO₂ were prevented from being released into the atmosphere.
- User-friendly facilities: The Monistrol Vila station features a large, free parking lot (1,000 cars) to encourage visitors to leave their private vehicles at the base of the mountain.
- Certified quality: We hold ISO 14001 and Safe Travels certifications, which recognize us as a high-quality tourist destination committed to the environment.
Núria Rack Railway
Located in the priceless setting of the Cabeceras del Ter y del Freser Natural Park, the Núria Rack Railway is the only way to access the valley, ensuring a car-free environment.
- Zero emissions: It runs exclusively on guaranteed solar power, saving approximately 120 metric tons of CO2 annually by eliminating the need for vehicles to access the mountain.
- Ecovall Project: This strategic initiative enables us to become more resilient to the climate emergency by expanding geothermal energy and retrofitting buildings for greater energy efficiency.
- Goodbye to diesel: We are renewing our fleet with electric vehicles, such as the TORGO 4x4, and moving toward the “Zero Diesel” goal to permanently eliminate fossil fuels from the resort.
