On the occasion of the new edition of the mountain’s most demanding charity race, on Saturday 16 May the funicular service will begin operating at midday, with the aim of ensuring the smooth running of the event.

Montserrat is preparing to once again host an unprecedented sporting challenge: the Vertical Montserrat. This race, which has already established itself as a must-attend event in the charity calendar, will test participants’ endurance up the 2,180 steps that follow the funicular’s route.
In order to ensure the safety of the runners and the smooth running of the event, Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) will change the opening hours of the Sant Joan funicular on Saturday 16 May.
According to forecasts, the service for the general public will begin at 12.30 pm. This measure will allow athletes in the various categories to complete the 388-metre vertical ascent from the Santa Cova lower station to the Sant Joan upper station without any interference on the route.
The Vertical Montserrat is now an essential fixture in the Montserrat calendar. Beyond the physical challenge of climbing the stairs that separate the lower station of the Holy Grotto from the upper one of Sant Joan, the event stands out for its inclusive nature and its commitment to at-risk children.
